TOP 5 Shoulder Exercises

Along with toned abs, thighs, and glutes, well-defined shoulders are a dream for both men and women. However, achieving definition—especially for men—takes time and consistent work at the gym.

For those of you looking for the right exercises for this area of the body, we’ve selected five of the most effective ones. With regular training, you’ll soon see results.

What are the shoulder muscles?

The shoulder muscle group (or deltoid) consists of three parts—the front, side, and rear delts—each of which has a different function. Some exercises work all parts of the shoulder, but to achieve even better results and definition in this area, you need to focus on exercises that target each part separately.

The front deltoid (front shoulder) starts at the outer part of the collarbone and is responsible for shoulder flexion. Most chest and shoulder exercises work this part of the shoulder, so it doesn’t need special attention.

The side of the shoulder (lateral deltoid) starts at the outer part of the shoulder blade and is located in the middle of the muscle group. Its function is to raise the arms out to the sides and upward. Suitable exercises for the lateral delts include dumbbell lateral raises and Arnold presses.

The rear deltoid (rear shoulder) has a stabilizing function and is responsible for moving the arm outward and to the side. It is worked more during back workouts than shoulder workouts. So, if you want to shape and emphasize a V-shaped back, you need to give it special attention. A suitable rear-delt exercise is the cable pull.

What are the 5 proven effective exercises for defined shoulders?

Barbell Shoulder Press

The barbell shoulder press is a highly effective compound exercise that works all three heads of the shoulder at once. For better results, perform the exercise standing up. This lets you move the weight along the path you choose and engages more muscle groups—some to lift the weight and others to stabilize the movement.

Here’s a great exercise for the latissimus dorsi: the single-arm lat pulldown. It’s a good way to even out the strength of the left and right sides of your body, as well as develop a symmetrical, aesthetic back. • Before you begin, choose an appropriate weight and make sure you’re in a stable starting position that allows you to pull the weight without losing your balance. • Pull the handle down slowly and with control, leading with your elbow. • Hold at the bottom of the movement, then return your arm to the starting position. Throughout the exercise, try to focus on the working muscle and picture it contracting to achieve the best possible activation. #pulsefitness #back #backattack #latpulldown #trainhard #training#motivation #dedication #exercise #fitness #gymmotivation #noexcuses

For proper form, stand in front of the bar with your feet slightly closer together than shoulder-width apart. Use a shoulder-width or slightly wider grip. Take hold of the bar and position yourself so it touches your upper chest, then press straight up. As you press, the bar should move above your head, not up and forward. This places more emphasis on the shoulder muscles and less on the back. If you don’t feel your shoulders working, you can reduce the weight and increase your reps, as well as shorten your rest periods. Do 4 sets of 15, 12, 10 or 8 reps, depending on your goals.

Dumbbell lateral raises

This is a great exercise for working the middle delts, but it’s harder to master than it looks. You can do it standing or seated, though standing raises are recommended for developing the shoulder muscles overall. Hold your arms in front of your body or by your thighs, bend your elbows very slightly and raise the dumbbells out to the sides. Do 3 sets of 12, 10 or 8 reps.

Choosing an appropriate weight is key here. With heavier weights, you lose control, which means you can’t perform the movement correctly or properly target the intended muscle group.

Upright barbell row (upright row with a barbell)

This exercise is also known as the barbell chin-up. It’s a highly productive compound exercise for the entire shoulder and for building shoulder mass. Follow these steps for proper form:

  1. Stand with your feet slightly apart.
  2. To focus more on the middle delts rather than the traps, avoid using an excessively narrow grip on the bar.
  3. Raise the bar to chest level, moving only at the shoulder and elbow joints.
  4. Pull the bar close to your body, with your elbows pointing out to the sides.
  5. Keep your body upright throughout.
  6. Do 4 sets of 12, 10 and 8 reps.

Arnold press

This exercise is named after legendary bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger because of its complexity and effectiveness in stimulating muscle growth.

It targets the front and middle delts. Perform it seated on a bench with an adjustable seat and backrest. The optimal backrest angle is 70–80 degrees. Once you’ve adjusted the seat and backrest, make sure your feet are planted firmly on the floor for support. Raise the dumbbells to chest level, with your palms facing your body and your elbows bent.

The single-arm dumbbell row is one of the best back exercises. Follow these instructions to perform the movement: • You can use a bench for the dumbbell row, or choose a stable support and brace yourself with one hand. When using a flat bench, try to keep your upper body parallel to the floor. This variation makes it harder to control your shoulder girdle, but allows for a greater range of motion. Alternatively, brace yourself with one hand on a stable support. In this variation, your upper body doesn’t have to be parallel to the floor, so the range of motion won’t be maximal, but it’s a better option if you want to use heavier weights. • Hold the weight in one hand. Don’t round your back. Your palm should face your body. This is the starting position. • Without changing your torso position, pull the weight up, keeping your arm close to your body. Exhale during this part of the movement. Focus on contracting your back muscles and try to use your biceps as little as possible. • Return the dumbbell to the starting position. Don’t drop it suddenly or let your shoulder relax completely. Exhale during this part of the movement. • Complete the desired number of reps. • Switch sides and repeat with the other arm. #dumbellrows #backworkout #backtraining #fitness #fitnessknowhow #pulsefitness

To perform the exercise, raise the dumbbells overhead with your arms straight and your palms facing forward. Hold this position for a second, then return your arms to the starting position. Do 3 sets of 14, 12 and 10 reps.

Cable face pull

If you want shoulders that fill out your T-shirt sleeves, you can’t skip exercises for the rear delts. Cable workouts are just what you need. As with all cable exercises, a key element here is keeping the muscles you’re working under tension throughout the movement.

Choose an appropriate weight and grab the handles. Stand with your feet slightly apart and your back straight. Pull the rope toward your face (the rope should be at eye level). Pull with your elbows, not your hands—the movement should take your elbows out and back. Do 4 sets of 15, 12, 12 and 10 reps at the end of your workout.

Always warm up before each workout and choose appropriate weights. This will not only help you avoid injuries, but also allow you to perform exercises correctly and achieve the results you expect.
