Winter is the trickiest season for every beginner fitness enthusiast, and it doesn’t go easy on even the more experienced. During the winter months, temperatures drop below zero, roads are icy and difficult to navigate, it gets dark earlier, and we tire more easily. These conditions scare everyone and can even put them off regular workouts.
Fortunately, this winter has been kind to sports, so the excuses above sound unconvincing if you’ve decided you want to transform your look by the summer months. What should you do to stay in shape even in February? How can you beat the winter slump? Follow these easy steps, and getting to the gym won’t be a struggle.
Motivation:
Whether women or men, we all have an ideal look we secretly hope to achieve. Be like Grigor Dimitrov or Ivet Lalova! Print out a photo of someone you hope to resemble one day, or set it as your laptop or phone wallpaper. Seeing your dream physique every day will make it easier to motivate yourself to achieve it. Still, we recommend being realistic and taking your own body type into account so you don’t end up disappointed.
Two is better than one:
If you feel your willpower isn’t strong enough during the cold months, you need a trusted friend by your side to motivate you. Ask your best friend to help by reminding you every day that you need to work out; ask the colleague sitting next to you to keep an eye on what you snack on while you work, and your partner to make sure you don’t overeat at dinner. Find a workout buddy who’ll be happy to join you at the gym. Seeing how much they enjoy a great workout will inspire you, too.
Finances:
At the beginning of the month, get a membership to the gym or a series of group classes. That way, you won’t want to skip a workout because you’ve already paid for it. The financial incentive can be more motivating than you might think.
Nutrition:
Plan your meals for the week and do your grocery shopping over the weekend. That way, you’ll have more time to choose quality ingredients and stock your fridge with healthy food you can cook yourself instead of simply ordering something. You’ll also have more time to work out during the week, rather than spending it shopping or lounging around.
Workouts:
Well, you’ve made it to the gym. Congratulations! Choose a sport you enjoy and would be happy to add to your routine. If you’re a fan of strength training, it’s time to consult a personal trainer, who can create a workout plan for you. If you prefer group classes, you have plenty to choose from.
If you’re consistent, stick to your routine and workouts, and don’t let laziness affect your motivation, you’ll be in for a big surprise when winter and the cold are gone. Because there’s nothing better than shedding a few extra inches along with your heavy winter clothes.
